Modern Studies National Survey HomeThis is a featured page

In 1986, 1993 and 2000, and with the support of the Modern Studies Association, I carried out a survey of all Scotland’s state secondary schools. Many independent schools participated too. In each case we were trying to find out how much Modern Studies was taught at each level, what topics were taught, and who was doing the teaching. The information gathered has been of enormous use, both to the Modern Studies community and third parties.

They were paper exercises, time-consuming and expensive, but their biggest problem was that the information was out of date even before that data was collated and published. So this time, we we’re taking advantage of 21st century technology to use the “wiki” concept for our latest survey. Web-based, it will allow online completion - and, more important still, updating – by school departments.

Please feel free to contribute information as often as you can – the more the better. In order to add something to your own department's page, all you have to do is sign up - I'd suggest you make your username your school (e.g "Drummond" or "WHEC") and make up your own password of course. Then navigate to your own page and off you go.

Once you've signed in, there's a button on the left-hand top corner of each page called "Easy Edit". Click on it, make your changes, and then don't forget to save! A couple of tips - the site works best on a PC on a decent version of Internet Explorer or Firefox, and on a Mac it's best on Firefox. Safari and Opera seem to be a disaster. Another thing is that the site looks slightly different on PCs and Macs. Finally, it can be viewed but NOT edited from inside some council firewalls - including Edinburgh. So if you want to play with it, I'm afraid you'll need to do it at home.

You'll see I'm looking for all the usual sort of information. I've set up every school page so that it can be adapted easily - and delete any rubbish of course - but any information is welcome. There's also a blog/discussion area which seems to come as a bonus with this provider.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. CLICK HERE TO PROCEED TO SITE PAGES.

strong rumour that Rod Stewart has been visiting his new best pal in Aberdour, certainly would not have visited Govan
